* We face new and emergent threats to our ways of life, from potential energy shortages as a result of peak oil, to the dangers posed by global warming, to economic instability, and even increased terrorist activity and transnational crime.
* The interconnected nature of the current global system means that the disruption of one area of the world can seriously affect life somewhere else.
* Governments are often powerless to do anything about these dangers, leaving individuals, communities, and businesses to fend for themselves.
* Because of this, people are now looking for ways to be more self sufficient, from generating their own power via solar, to growing their own food.
* Businesses are also looking for ways to mitigate against risk, seeking to shore up their supply lines and cater to a local, but much more dependent market.
* Unfortunately making oneself more self sufficient and resilient takes a great deal of time, something which people may have in short supply. This leaves them vulnerable and dependent on others should things go wrong.
My idea is to create a website which can provide people not only with all the information they need to become more resilient, but also where they can buy equipment, manuals, and entire "resilience kits" taIlored to their own needs.
It will also offer consulting services for business, non-profits, and small towns or cities to help strengthen infrastructure and other critical needs, helping them shift from dependency on centralized providers, to either self sufficiency and or local partnerships.
It is is "social venture" because it is seeking to make a small profit while providing a public good, the strengthening of the system in order to make it more resistant to disasters, conflicts, economic problems, etc.
