(3277) Destroying Large Earth Bound objects with Nuclear Devices

Shake it Thumb this up Digg this idea Save on delicious Share on Facebook

It is a common perception that if an Asteroid or Comet which posed a threat to Earth was heading this way, one possible solution would be to destroy it with a Nuclear weapon.

My question though, is this:

Does anyone know what would happen when such a nuclear device is detonated in the vaccuum of space?

On earth, as devestating as these weapons are, the force of the blast is at least opposed by the density of matter in the atmosphere in a closed system.

But in space, there are no such opposing forces.

so would the effect of a ten mega-ton device in space be similar to a 1000 mega-ton device on earth?
