The Problem: In this era of high fuel prices, freight transportation and delivery account for a high impact in CO2 emissions and energy costs, specially in busy cities. Besides, encouraging the use of public transport is a must, being the metro (subway, the tube, ..., ) one of the "greenest" ways. The Solution: Why not combine both issues in a single idea?In most cities the subway doesn't work by night due to people not using it (therefore not profitable) or being too costly or ins...

I just moved, and now that I am leaving outside of my beloved city, grabbing the car to fulfill even the simplest necessities seems a bit too much! All around us hundreds of neat houses shed thousands of people everyday… Many are wise enough to look for public transportation… But that often means walking large distances from the house to the bus stop or train station… So I wonder… Wouldn’t it be nice if the city council would provide the community with free b...

Intelligent use of wasted Human Body Energy

On the one hand: energy is getting scarce and expensive. On the other hand: people are getting fat and unhealthyHow about transforming our own wasted body energy into energy ?Killer application: a "hand exercising machine" in waiting rooms, for example a doctor's waiting room. People waiting could exercice a bit, and the "hand exercising machine" would produce energy that could for example fuel the lights of the waiting room... Or be stored somehow for a later usage. ...

Recycled Batteries

The mind was wondering this afternoon and thoughts soon turned to creatively recycling. I remembered reading a project regarding the making of a Joule Thief which involves using a simple bit of circuitry to squeeze the last remaining juices of power out of dead batteries. As we’re all encouraged to dispose of our spent batteries separately to the usual domestic waste, surely local councils could rack them all up at a central depot and Joule Thief them to death. The quantities of batterie...

energy crisis

Hi,Now a days we are going through a tough time on the electricity (India). We use lot of street lights even if there is no vehicle on the road. The idea is that each and every lamp post to have a "sensor" in order to detect the "movement" on the road in order to make the lamp "on" else should be "off". These "lamp-sensors" will have "communication" with the next lamp post and so on. regardsYukti

It is a fact that petroleum prices have a direct impact on any country economy. Specially in Spain and the rest of EU, petroleum high prices have made food, transportation,... prices to be increased more than expected. And are in part responsable of the crisis we are living those days.  Goverments are taking measures to increase the use of hybrid and electric vehicles to reduce petroleum dependency and I think it is a very important step.  But think about this:...

Light saving in cities

Since: October 8th 2008, Brain-fu: 161

Many cities use night lighting to make life safer . . . but after certain hours, in most places, in most cities, public lighting is just a waste of energy and money. Solution Proposed: Why don't cities use a movement detector, like the ones in the entrance of malls, to turn on the street lights when a pedestrian or a car approaches, so that the lights are on only when they are needed? They could be left on for a short while, say one minute, and then turned off again if no new pedestrian or ca...

All of us are pretty concious of the need to implement effective measures to decrease the energy consumption, but our life is so dependant of energy that we, as individuals, don't know most of the times what to do or how to act in such respect.I think it would be a good idea if the candle's manufacturers and associations implement a marketing and public relations campaign to promote the use of candles at home and restaurants at dinner time.Candles permit a lot of appropiate and meaningful com...

In order to keep the heat that houses storage in summer time, a battery  should keep theis heat to use it in winter time, just the same we can storage other energies.Para poder almacenar el calor que las casas acumulan en verano, una batería debería almacenar ese calor para poder utilizarlo en invierno al igual que se hace con otras energías.
