A commercial airplane consumes an amount of fuel that is very much proportional to the weight it carries. In order to reduce it, much to the profit of the airline and the environment, this should be reduced as much as possible. A sensible approach is to make the price of the airfare depend on the weight the passenger represents -himself and his luggage. However, airlines have not even introduced discounts for those that are ready to travel without luggage. Are there some basics on the airline business I am missing, or shouldn't we be devising a transition in the structure on the airfare prices reflecting actual expenses and environmental impact?
